Archbishop of Tuam Dr Michael Neary has criticised those involved in encouraging people to believe there was to be an apparition at the Knock Shrine.
In a statement issued today, he claimed that the apparition in Knock in 1879 was neither sought nor expected by humble, honest people who were its astonished witnesses.
He said that unfortunately, recent events at the Shrine risk misleading God's people and undermining faith.
For this reason such events are to regretted rather than be encouraged.
He said the Shrine would be best served by maintaining its authentic identity.
